Can you put soil in a skip?

Approved soil, rubble and hardcore loads belong in suitable 2- or 4-yard skips under DJ Recycling’s published restrictions, not 6- or 8-yard skips.

The short answer

Approved soil, rubble and hardcore loads belong in suitable 2- or 4-yard skips under DJ Recycling’s published restrictions, not 6- or 8-yard skips.

Why the type of waste matters

Soil is dense, and the weight limit can be reached long before a large container looks full. Soil mixed with roots, rubbish, asbestos or other contamination may not qualify for the quoted clean-hardcore rate.

What to do before loading

Tell DJ Recycling whether the load contains topsoil, clay, stones, broken concrete or excavation spoil. Supply approximate volume and a postcode; testing may be required for suspect or contaminated material.

A 2-yard or 4-yard container can be more appropriate than a larger skip; grab hire may suit some accessible excavation projects, subject to confirmation.

Compare the right disposal option

Before paying for a skip, compare skip hire with collection services. Tell the team exactly what you have and whether it is already mixed. The waste category affects both price and acceptance.

All displayed skip prices exclude VAT. Delivery, collection and tipping are included in the price. Heavy soil, rubble and hardcore are restricted to 2- and 4-yard skips. Ton bags and skip bags are quoted separately.

How much soil a skip can really take

Soil is one of the heaviest things people put in a skip. A small skip that looks half empty can already be close to its safe lifting weight when it is full of earth, which is why we limit soil to our 2 and 4-yard skips.

Clean soil and turf from a garden dig is easier to deal with than soil mixed with rubble, roots, plastic or general rubbish. If you can keep it clean, tell us, as it may change the price.

Fill soil level with the top of the skip and never above it. An overloaded skip cannot be lifted safely or driven on the road. If you have a lot of earth to move, it is often cheaper to book two small skips one after the other, or to ask about grab hire for very large amounts.

Frequently asked questions

Is soil included in a general skip price?

Not automatically. The quoted price covers a particular accepted waste stream. Ask DJ Recycling to confirm the material and any separate collection or disposal cost.

What is the safest way to check?

Send the team your postcode, a photograph of the material and an approximate quantity before you load or order a container.
