The short answer

A mattress should not be put into a standard skip without specific approval. Mattresses are bulky and often require a separate collection route and charges.

Why the type of waste matters

Mattresses are not the same as upholstered seating for the Environment Agency’s domestic-seating POPs guidance, but they still need their own waste handling checks. A mattress can take disproportionate space and may be excluded from the agreed skip rate.

What to do before loading

Ask for mattress disposal, describe the type and size and mention any access issues such as staircases or flats.

A clean mattress is not automatically accepted just because it fits. Confirm the approved disposal route and any extra charge first.

Compare the right disposal option

Before paying for a skip, compare skip hire with collection services. Tell the team exactly what you have and whether it is already mixed. The waste category affects both price and acceptance.

All displayed skip prices exclude VAT. Delivery, collection and tipping are included in the price. Heavy soil, rubble and hardcore are restricted to 2- and 4-yard skips. Ton bags and skip bags are quoted separately.

Why mattresses are handled separately

Mattresses are bulky and awkward, and most are made of a mix of springs, foam and fabric. Because of that, many skip companies, including us, ask you to mention them separately rather than just throwing them in with general waste.

A mattress takes up a lot of space in a skip and can make it harder to load the rest of your waste safely. Separating it also means the springs and materials can be recovered where possible.

If you only have a mattress or two, a collection is usually cheaper and quicker than a skip. If you are already hiring a skip for a bigger clear-out, tell us how many mattresses there are and we will include them in your price.

Frequently asked questions

Is mattress included in a general skip price?

Not automatically. The quoted price covers a particular accepted waste stream. Ask DJ Recycling to confirm the material and any separate collection or disposal cost.

What is the safest way to check?

Send the team your postcode, a photograph of the material and an approximate quantity before you load or order a container.
