Can you put electrical items in a skip?
Electrical items and batteries should not be put into a normal mixed-waste skip. They need suitable WEEE or battery handling rather than general rubble or household waste disposal.

The short answer
Electrical items and batteries should not be put into a normal mixed-waste skip. They need suitable WEEE or battery handling rather than general rubble or household waste disposal.
Why the type of waste matters
This includes televisions, computers, fridges, power tools, loose lithium batteries and disposable vapes. Batteries can start fires in waste vehicles and treatment facilities.
What to do before loading
Keep electrical devices and batteries separate; ask the council or a licensed specialist about appropriate recycling. Do not place batteries inside another waste item to hide them.
If you are clearing a property, list every electrical item when requesting house clearance so the team can explain what it can collect.
Compare the right disposal option
Before paying for a skip, compare skip hire with collection services. Tell the team exactly what you have and whether it is already mixed. The waste category affects both price and acceptance.
| Skip size | Hardcore only | Green waste only | Mixed / general |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 yard | £100 | Ask for a quote | £125 |
| 4 yard | £130 | £150 | £220 |
| 6 yard | Not accepted | £180 | £250 |
| 8 yard | Not accepted | £200 | £320 |
All displayed skip prices exclude VAT. Delivery, collection and tipping are included in the price. Heavy soil, rubble and hardcore are restricted to 2- and 4-yard skips. Ton bags and skip bags are quoted separately.
What to do with old electricals instead
Electrical items, from kettles and toasters to fridges and TVs, are covered by the WEEE rules and should not go in a mixed skip. They contain metals and components that need to be recovered, and some, like fridges and freezers, contain gases that must be handled carefully.
Many shops that sell new electricals will take an old one back when you buy a replacement, and West Sussex household waste recycling sites accept most electrical items from residents. For a working appliance, a charity or reuse group may be glad to have it.
If you are clearing a whole property and there are several appliances mixed in with other waste, tell us when you book. We can tell you which items we can take separately and how they will be priced, so nothing ends up in the wrong place.
Frequently asked questions
Is electrical items included in a general skip price?
Not automatically. The quoted price covers a particular accepted waste stream. Ask DJ Recycling to confirm the material and any separate collection or disposal cost.
What is the safest way to check?
Send the team your postcode, a photograph of the material and an approximate quantity before you load or order a container.
